The day was clear and bright as I went into Hebrew Senior Life to meet Nancy*. We talked some and then read some poetry. Often times, when I ask Nancy about her past poetry, she replies that she cannot find her old journals. However, she can often recite one of her favorite poems from memory!
I find it so amazing that despite her dementia, Nancy is able to recall poetry from years ago so clearly and without any hesitation. Today was the first time I decided to record her reciting her poem - it lasted six minutes! To put her poem simply, it’s about rain. Meanwhile, to put it more elaborate, the poem is about people’s lives, how they appreciate nature, and the diversity around us. Nancy wrote beautiful poetry, and one of my ideas is to gift her with a new journal next semester!
